SIGHS
I inserted a link to this poem in another post. But after re-reading it, I thought to submit it.
SIGHS
Pulling her chair from the table she plopped
Down in her seat for a flavorful stop.
Perusing the pictures of tantalizing treats
And reviewing the list. What would she eat?
Chattering and laughing were heard nearby
As children were eating and playing. She sighed.
Nevermind a quiet coffee and dessert.
This was to be a reward for her efforts.
A whole week she’d spent working her plan
Trying to get back on her feet again.
She’d done well to land a job that day.
So, she wanted to find a way to celebrate.
Only to be interrupted by the playful
Chants from the siblings at the next table
“OK. It’s all good”, she said, taking a sip
Of her white chocolate mocha topped with cool whip
A child, just over five, was poised
At the edge of his chair-
He was making all the noise.
He’d bang his fork on the plate.
Grind it across his teeth as he ate.
“Can’t she just make them behave?”
She did everything in her power to stave
All the frustration welling up within.
Thinking of how to bring the calm again.
She’d make a scene if she moved.
That’s when she saw him. ‘OOO!
“Hey!” She heard herself call.
“Be careful! You’re gonna fall!”
He whipped around to look at her.
Then sat back down to his mom’s stern words.
Turning and sticking out his tongue at her,
He took a drink and spilled milk on his shirt.
She simply couldn’t take her eyes from the scene.
How could that mother not be more keen?
He simply can’t be left to himself
Maybe she could be of some help.
Eyeing the glass he just replaced.
She moved to his table with such haste.
Surely he’d knock the glass to the floor
If he pushed it even one inch more.
As he reached his hand for another bite
His arm met the glass and put it to flight.
Her hand tried to catch it, but to her woe,
A backpack caught her foot just so.
Grabbing for anything to break her fall
She landed on their table in sight of all.
So much for a peaceful prize.
And her reward for assistance was met with their-sigh!
